Five Domestic Game Studios Drive Ethiopia's Emerging Gaming Industry
The domestic gaming industry in Ethiopia is currently anchored by five key game development studios, with four of them already offering their products to real users. Among the notable developers, Dire Lej created a game titled "Rise of Fearless," which draws inspiration from the historical Battle of Adwa and the rock-hewn architecture of Lalibela, attracting over 15,000 users during its open beta testing phase. Another studio, Muqecha, founded by Yohannes Fikremariam, developed "Lomi," a game rooted in the traditional lemon-throwing custom of the Timkat festival. Yohannes described the game's focus as being about 70 percent social impact. Additionally, Enchawet creates educational games designed specifically for young learners. Meanwhile, the developer Efuye Gela has actively tested a new tabletop game with a group of 300 students. Together, these studios reflect a growing effort to build a culturally relevant and educational gaming sector in the country.
