Ethiopia’s Converging Conflicts Pose Rising Regional Risks in the Horn of Africa
A new op-ed by Adam Daud Ahmed published in Addis Standard warns that Ethiopia’s renewed fighting risks escalating far beyond a simple return to war in the Tigray region. The analysis emphasizes that ongoing internal conflicts in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia are increasingly converging with broader international and maritime tensions involving Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt, the Nile basin, and the Red Sea corridor. The author argues that these multiple distinct conflicts could become mutually reinforcing, significantly compounding the political and military crisis. Such an escalation makes the overall situation considerably harder to contain within national borders. Consequently, this complex interplay of domestic and regional dynamics sharply increases the risk of wider instability across the Horn of Africa.
