Drone strike on IDP camp in Amhara region kills 16
A drone strike killed 16 civilians and injured 22 others this morning at the Hayiq Jari 2 internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in the Amhara region, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to Addis Standard. The attack, which occurred around 11:00 a.m., reportedly involved at least five separate strikes at 15-minute intervals, hitting victims inside their shelters. Among the casualties were pregnant women, an eight-year-old girl, and students.
Residents reported that due to a lack of burial space, 15 of the deceased were buried in a single mass grave. The IDPs residing at the camp had been displaced from various parts of Oromia, including East and West Wollega and West Shewa. Ongoing insecurity and limited infrastructure continue to hinder their ability to return home or relocate.
