PM Abiy Ahmed Issues Strong Warning to Eritrea
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has issued a stern warning to Eritrea, stating that while Ethiopia desires a development partnership, continuing on a path of hostility relying on external forces will have "severe" consequences. The Prime Minister made these remarks during a time of heightened tension, following the resumption of the conflict in Tigray and reports of Eritrean troops crossing into Ethiopian territory. Abiy noted that Ethiopia has already informed the United Nations of the alleged incursions, accusing Eritrea of becoming a tool for Ethiopia's enemies while neglecting its own development.
During the interview, the Prime Minister compared Asmara to various Ethiopian cities, arguing that the Eritrean people have lost out on development since independence, leading to widespread migration. He asserted that the Eritrean government's cooperation with rebel groups threatens Ethiopia's security and emphasized that good neighborliness is the only viable path forward. There has been no immediate response from the Eritrean government to these remarks.
