Ugandan General Muhoozi Kainerugaba Expresses Readiness to Send Troops to Ethiopia
The Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced on social media that Uganda is prepared to deploy its military forces to Ethiopia if requested by the Ethiopian government. General Muhoozi, who is the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, stated that Uganda has decided to support Ethiopia and would send the undefeated UPDF if requested by Ethiopian leadership. This statement comes amidst reports of renewed tensions in northern Ethiopia, particularly the Tigray region. General Muhoozi's stance on Ethiopia has evolved over time; in 2021, he publicly supported the TPLF, but after a visit to Addis Ababa in 2022 and meetings with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, his position shifted to strongly backing the Ethiopian government. Ethiopia and Uganda have maintained formal military and security cooperation agreements since 2015, focusing on joint military training and intelligence sharing. General Muhoozi is well known for making controversial statements on international diplomacy and security issues via social media.
