PM Abiy Ahmed Issues Irreecha Message Amid Regional Tensions and Political Shifts
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has delivered an Irreecha festival message calling for unity, peace, and reconciliation among Ethiopians. The message comes during a challenging period marked by renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia between federal forces and armed groups, as well as escalating diplomatic tensions with Eritrea and Egypt. Ethiopia recently closed its embassy in Asmara, ordered the expulsion of Eritrean and Egyptian diplomats, and faced reciprocal actions from those nations. Meanwhile, seven armed Ethiopian opposition groups, including OLA, TPLF, and Fano, have formed a coalition named 'Self-Preservation Alliance' aimed at ousting Abiy's government. Addressing the political atmosphere, Abiy reiterated that the 'door of peace' remains open for groups seeking peaceful dialogue to resolve differences. Additionally, regional events leading up to Irreecha at Hora Finfinnee and Hora Harsadi are underway across Oromia, with officials emphasizing cultural revitalization efforts.
