Young man successfully undergoes rare surgery at Adama Hospital
A young man named Ayana, hailing from rural Najjo in West Wollega, successfully underwent a complex surgery at Adama Hospital to remove a 10kg facial tumor he had carried for 22 years. The condition, identified as Neurofibromatosis, was congenital and had caused significant physical damage, including spinal issues, making his treatment medically complex. Dr. Abebe Firdissa, who leads the plastic and reconstructive surgery unit, discovered Ayana's case on social media and coordinated his travel and treatment. The surgery, which required specialized equipment like fiberoptic intubation, was performed for free with the support of social media users who covered travel expenses. Dr. Abebe and his team emphasized that while this case gained public attention, they routinely perform such reconstructive procedures.
