Tennessee Execution of Christa Pike Halted After Lethal Injection Fails to Stop Her Heart
The execution of Christa Pike, a 50-year-old death row inmate in Tennessee, was abruptly halted on Wednesday night at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. Officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, but her heart failed to stop beating, and she remained conscious while breathing heavily. Her legal defense team quickly filed an emergency motion, arguing that the lethal injection protocol was flawed and failed to adhere to legal execution standards. Judge Clifton L. Corker granted the emergency request, ordering execution officials to stop the process and allow medical personnel to provide life-saving intervention. Dr. Joel Zivot from Emory University School of Medicine noted that Pike lacked sufficient blood flow for the lethal drug to take effect properly, warning that the delay could have caused severe brain damage. Pike was convicted in 1996 for the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer when Pike was 18, making her the only woman on death row in Tennessee.
