Paternity dispute leads to violence and deaths in Somalia
A paternity dispute between two families in Galkayo, Somalia, has escalated into violent clashes that resulted in 7 deaths and 21 injuries. A panel of Islamic scholars appointed by Puntland officials ruled that Liban Tahlil Haji Aden is the legal father of the child, rejecting claims by Farah Awil Ali, who had raised the boy for 13 years. The conflict, which deeply polarized the local community, is rooted in the testimony of the child's mother regarding her marriage timelines. Following the verdict, Farah expressed his intent to respect the decision but raised questions regarding reimbursement for the 13 years he spent raising the child. The dispute has previously led to targeted killings, including the murder of Liban's brother in February 2024. Liban has called for reconciliation and offered forgiveness, urging an end to the cycle of violence. The court's ruling did not address the financial claims or the accountability for the prior deaths.
