WFP Warns Over 266 Million Face Severe Hunger Amid Global Conflicts
World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Luke Lindberg warned that over 266 million people globally are facing severe food insecurity and famine. Lindberg, who began his role on October 28 in New York, stated that ongoing conflicts—particularly in Sudan and the Middle East—are the primary drivers of this crisis, disrupting global supply chains. He noted that aid agencies are struggling with funding shortages, even as nations commit trillions to military expenditures.
Reports indicate that food is increasingly being used as a weapon of war in these conflicts, which is a direct violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2417. The WFP emphasizes that food aid alone cannot solve the crisis; addressing the root causes through sustainable peace and meaningful diplomatic dialogue is essential. Without urgent action to implement peace agreements, the trend toward famine and death for millions remains an imminent threat.
