Eritrean Farmer Named One of FAO's '100 Food Heroes' of 2026
Eritrean farmer Rosina Mebrahtu has been recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as one of the '100 Food and Agriculture Heroes' of 2026. The award was presented on October 16 during the World Food Day celebration in Rome. Ms. Rosina was selected from over 600 candidates across 131 countries for her outstanding contributions to sustainable agriculture, natural resource conservation, and transforming barren land into fertile fields.
Residing in the Adi-Keyih sub-zone of Eritrea's Southern region, Ms. Rosina has been working as a mixed-crop farmer. After her husband passed away 12 years ago, she and her children dedicated themselves to reclaiming their land through intensive soil improvement efforts. She had previously received a national award in 2022 for high-yield potato production. The FAO presents this annual recognition to individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to food security, environmental sustainability, and improving rural livelihoods.
