Ethiopia Pilots Offline AI Teacher Assistant Tool

Ethiopia has launched an 'Agentic AI Teacher Assistant' pilot project designed to operate entirely offline on standard laptops, aiming to bridge educational connectivity gaps. Developed with World Bank support under the 226 million USD Ethiopia Education Transformation Operation (ETOL) project, the tool creates lesson plans and exam questions for grades 9–12. This follows an earlier successful AI-coach app pilot involving over 350 English and math teachers.

Despite the push for digital education, the sector faces significant structural hurdles. The World Bank notes that 90 percent of ten-year-olds in the country cannot read simple sentences, and systemic issues like overcrowded classrooms, teacher licensing shortages, and poor infrastructure persist. Government officials, including National Bank Governor Eyob Tekalign (PhD), emphasized that while these challenges are severe, the AI tools are being implemented to provide immediate support rather than waiting for ideal conditions.
