Ethiopia Payment Switch Data: P2P Transfers Dominate Digital Transactions

Ethiopia’s national electronic payments switch, EthSwitch, reported that person-to-person (P2P) transfers accounted for 85 percent of the 7.8 billion USD in transactions processed during the 2025/26 financial year. Out of 387 million interoperable transactions, P2P transfers made up 242.6 million transactions valued at approximately 6.6 billion USD.

In contrast, merchant payment channels like POS and QR remain limited, representing only 1.2 percent of the total volume processed through the network. ATM transactions stood as the second-largest category, totaling approximately 1.2 billion USD. Additionally, EthSwitch reported a gross profit before tax of approximately 16.1 million USD for the year, while continuing to advance the EthioPay Instant Payment System to support wider digital financial inclusion.
