Addis Ababa Introduces Online Tax Filing and Revised Audit Procedures

The Addis Ababa Revenues Bureau has introduced a new online annual tax filing system and revised audit procedures, effective from the 2026/27 fiscal year. This initiative allows taxpayers to submit financial records electronically, eliminating the need for in-person visits. Crucially, the reform addresses long-standing complaints by clearly distinguishing between commercial income and personal funds such as loans, inheritance, gifts, and traditional 'equb' savings. Taxpayers are instructed to separate business bank accounts from personal ones to ensure accurate assessments. The bureau states these changes aim to reduce direct interaction with tax officials, minimize administrative burdens, and prevent inconsistent tax assessments.
