Ethiopia Submits Candidacy for ICAO Council Membership
Ethiopia has officially submitted its candidacy for membership in the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). As the UN agency governing global aviation standards, safety, and security, the ICAO Council makes critical decisions regarding air navigation and environmental policies. Ethiopia is leveraging its established aviation infrastructure, the extensive network of Ethiopian Airlines, and its technical expertise in safety and security as the core of its bid.
The ICAO Council consists of 36 member states elected for three-year terms based on their significance in air transport and geographical representation. If elected, Ethiopia has pledged to support ICAO’s objectives, including the 'No Country Left Behind' initiative, which aims to assist nations with limited aviation infrastructure. This candidacy reflects Ethiopia's strategic goal to translate its operational dominance in African aviation into formal influence within global policy-making structures.
