Ethiopia's coffee traceability system vs. EU deforestation regulation risks

Ethiopia has implemented a national coffee traceability system (ECTMS) covering over 1.5 million farms to track production from source to export. However, a recent ODI Global report warns that gaps in meeting the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requirements could exclude up to 60 percent of Ethiopian smallholder coffee farmers from the EU market. The ECTMS platform integrates producer registration, farm mapping, and supply-chain records to assist exporters in providing the necessary proof of legality and geolocation data to EU buyers.

The EU accounts for approximately 30 percent of Ethiopia's coffee exports. ODI Global projects that if compliance gaps persist, the potential market exclusion could reduce Ethiopia's GDP by up to 0.5 percent and negatively impact foreign exchange earnings. While reports indicate that coffee cultivation is not a primary driver of deforestation in Ethiopia, the administrative burden of digital geolocation and land tenure documentation remains a significant barrier for farmers to access European markets.
