Ethiopian Deposit Insurance Fund Reports Rise in Premium Income

The Ethiopian Deposit Insurance Fund (EDIF) announced that it collected 2.61 billion birr in premiums during the first quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year, marking a 25.48 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Since its inception three years ago, the fund has accumulated a total of 26 billion birr.

The fund provides insurance for depositors in banks and microfinance institutions, offering a reimbursement of up to 100,000 birr per depositor if an institution fails. However, EDIF acknowledged that inflation and currency depreciation have significantly eroded the real value of this coverage ceiling. Currently, the fund oversees 97 member institutions, including 31 commercial banks and 66 microfinance institutions.
