Ethiopian Electric Utility Inaugurates 11 New EV Charging Stations
The Ethiopian Electric Utility has inaugurated 11 new electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations across Bishoftu, Mojo, Adama, Batu, Hawassa, and Addis Ababa. This brings the total number of operational stations to 14, capable of charging 150 vehicles simultaneously. Utility CEO Engineer Getu Geremew stated that these stations aim to utilize renewable energy, reduce fuel imports, and save foreign currency. The government has implemented tax incentives for EVs and restricted internal-combustion-engine vehicle imports to support this transition.
The utility also signed an MOU with Huawei and other Chinese firms to study an integrated charging network for heavy trucks along the Ethio-Djibouti trade corridor. Given the estimated fleet of over 140,000 EVs, the utility plans further expansion to cities like Mekelle, Bahir Dar, and Dire Dawa, as part of a 40-station phase one project costing approximately 10 million USD.
