Escalating Conflicts Threaten International Attention on the Horn of Africa
Political analysts warn that escalating conflicts in Northern Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan are fragmenting international attention toward the Horn of Africa. Researchers Hager Ali from the German Institute for Global and Area Studies and Dr. Meressa Tsehaye of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) state that the proliferation of crises depletes the limited financial and human resources available for conflict resolution. They emphasize that international attention is already limited, and the intersection of competing national interests further complicates the region's stability.
The experts highlighted that the ongoing civil war in Sudan has resulted in over 150,000 deaths and millions of displacements, while the peace agreement in Ethiopia has struggled to prevent fresh outbreaks of conflict. According to the analysts, the increasing number of crises also fosters black-market arms proliferation and encourages external powers to intervene based on their own strategic interests, often undermining genuine peace efforts.
