UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) concludes its operations
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has officially concluded after 11 years of operations. Established in 2013, the mission was intended to support Somalia's transition to a democratic system and the rule of law. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had initially requested the termination of the mission in May 2024 but subsequently requested a two-year extension. UN Deputy Envoy for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga, described the closure as the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, noting that responsibilities have been transferred to Somali government institutions and existing UN offices. The closure occurs amid rising security concerns with the Al-Shabaab group, even as the country prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for May and April 2019 respectively.
