Eritrean Troops Advance Deeper into Tigray Escalating Regional Tensions
Deutsche Welle reports that Eritrean troops are moving deeper into central Tigray, marking a major escalation that is drawing Ethiopia and Eritrea toward direct confrontation. Up to this point, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has restrained Ethiopian forces from directly engaging Eritrean troops crossing the border, despite escalating rhetoric between Addis Ababa and Asmara. Abiy has also refrained from deploying airpower against TPLF leaders who fled into Eritrea. However, President Isaias Afwerki appears to have made a decisive move despite explicit warnings from the United States and the European Union, which both called for respecting Ethiopia's territorial integrity and avoiding actions that widen the conflict. If Eritrean forces operate openly inside Ethiopian territory, it will be hard for international actors to demand restraint without recognizing Ethiopia's right to defend its territory. Furthermore, continued restraint creates significant political and military pressure for Abiy if Ethiopian forces remain ordered not to engage while Eritrean troops advance. Consequently, a direct conflict is becoming difficult to avoid, and the Ethiopian parliament may soon be pushed to consider a formal declaration of war.
