AU Approves 2027 Budget and Sanctions Defaulting Member States
The African Union's Executive Council has formally approved a total budget of USD 800 million for the 2027 fiscal year. Alongside this financial decision, the AU introduced a new Scale of Assessment for member contributions covering the 2027–2029 budget cycle. Reports indicate that 13 member states have been sanctioned for defaulting on their financial obligations to the continental body.
This restructuring represents a significant effort to reform the AU's fiscal management and ensure sustainable funding. The new contribution formula aims to reshape how member states support the organization's operational goals. By imposing sanctions on those in arrears, the AU seeks to enforce stricter compliance and financial discipline among its membership moving forward.
