Study in Addis Ababa Reveals Health Risks in Raw Milk Quality and Handling
A study conducted by the Addis Ababa City Farmers and Urban Agriculture Development Commission across 11 sub-cities has identified significant health risks in raw milk handling, from breeding sheds to final sales. Deputy Commissioner Tsega Lemma reported that issues include water adulteration, improper antibiotic usage where cows are milked before veterinary medicine fully clears their systems, and potential aflatoxin contamination in feed storage. The assessment also highlighted the widespread use of unsuitable containers, such as unhygienic plastic jugs and bottles, which release microplastics when exposed to heat and sunlight. While the study did not definitively confirm cancer-causing agents, officials acknowledged public complaints regarding chemical additives used to prevent milk curdling. Doctors warn that consuming chemical residues and drug leftovers in milk poses severe long-term health hazards, prompting the commission to draft detailed regulatory frameworks and enforce stricter controls.
