UN expresses concern over attacks on humanitarian workers in Ethiopia
The United Nations (UN) has expressed deep concern over attacks targeting humanitarian workers, assets, and infrastructure in Ethiopia. Dr. Ozonnia Ojielo, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, stated that escalating tensions in the northern part of the country are severely hindering aid delivery. Between 2025 and 2026, at least 10 humanitarian vehicles were looted by armed groups, with only two recovered so far, while aid workers have faced abduction, coercion, and harassment.
The coordinator has called for the immediate and unconditional return of stolen vehicles and urged all parties to respect international humanitarian laws. He emphasized that aid workers and assets must be protected from harm at all times. Furthermore, he advised humanitarian organizations to ensure vehicles are clearly marked and to strictly adhere to security protocols when operating in high-risk areas to facilitate safe aid delivery.
