African Economic Independence and Ethiopia's Infrastructure Projects
Billionaire Aliko Dangote has urged African nations to prioritize domestic processing of raw materials over exports to secure true economic independence. He argues that Africans must take responsibility for their own development rather than relying on foreign economies. Currently, Dangote is investing in major Ethiopian projects, including a fertilizer factory and a $660 million oil pipeline connecting Ethiopia to Djibouti. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted that this pipeline will drastically improve efficiency by reducing the fuel transport time from five days to one day. Additionally, Ethiopia is investing over $50 million in a gold refinery to add value to its exports. Dr. Marit Kixaaw, an expert at the UN Economic Commission for Africa, noted that this strategy aligns with the 'Africa Mining Vision' initiated in 2009 to maximize resource value. This shift is driven largely by the increasing demand from youth for better job opportunities and sustainable economic growth.
