South Africa: Men Mobilize to Combat Rising Gender-Based Violence and Femicide
In response to a severe wave of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa, community-based male initiatives are emerging to address the root causes of the crisis. In Johannesburg, gatherings organized by the charity 'Father A Nation' bring men together in informal settings to discuss their past behaviors, accountability, and positive masculinity. The movement comes as public outrage intensifies over the discovery of 12 women's bodies within three months in the city of Ekurhuleni. Official statistics from the South African Human Rights Commission reveal that 5,427 murders occurred between April and June this year, including the killings of 569 women—averaging six female homicides per day—and 1,052 attempted murders. Furthermore, a 2022 study by the Human Sciences Research Council indicates that over 35% of South African women experience physical or sexual violence, often perpetrated by intimate partners. While President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced government measures such as improved street lighting and reviews of cold cases, community coordinators like Itumeleng Stephen Tamaga criticize these actions as insufficient and delayed, emphasizing that men themselves must actively intervene to stop the violence before it occurs.
