Conflict in Moyale Displaces Over 40,000 People
A violent conflict in the border town of Moyale between Oromo and Somali communities has resulted in over 40,000 people fleeing into Kenya, according to the Kenyan Red Cross. Residents and local officials state the unrest began a week ago over the hoisting of the Somali regional flag in an area contested by Oromo residents. Mayors from both sides have traded accusations, with Moyale (Oromia side) Mayor Galma Koroficha blaming Somali security forces, while Mayor Kula Ali Abdirahman of the Somali side claims the conflict arose from opposition to a new administrative office. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of government intervention, reporting that heavy weaponry is being used and that some fighters may have come from outside the region, including an alleged capture of an individual with Tigrayan identification. Casualties are reported to be high, and many displaced people are suffering without food or medical care.
