Ethiopia and Eritrea escalate diplomatic tensions at UN Security Council
Ethiopia and Eritrea have escalated their diplomatic dispute to the UN Security Council, accusing each other of violating sovereignty and threatening regional stability. On October 7, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedeon Timothewos, reported that Eritrean mechanized units had crossed the border, penetrating 30 to 60 kilometers into three zones of the Tigray region, and declared that Ethiopia has no choice but to defend itself. Conversely, Eritrea’s Foreign Minister, Osman Saleh, responded by accusing Ethiopia of declaring war through its pursuit of a sea outlet, formally requesting the UN Security Council to take action against what it describes as Ethiopia's warmongering.
The crisis reflects worsening bilateral relations and the breakdown of communication between Addis Ababa and Asmara. Diplomatic experts warn that the Security Council's response remains uncertain due to the conflicting geopolitical interests of the five permanent veto-holding members. While the UN charter mandates the maintenance of international peace and security, historical precedents show that military intervention or sanctions are rarely achieved due to these divisions among global powers.
