8 dead, many injured in UXO explosion in Yechila, Tigray

Eight people have died and many others were injured following the explosion of unexploded ordnance in Yechila, Abergelle district, Tigray region. The incident occurred on October 17, 2019, when collected scrap metal, which included unexploded munitions, detonated near residential houses. Among the casualties are children who were playing nearby at the time of the explosion. The manager of Yechila Hospital stated that 18 people were affected in total, with 15 initially admitted to the facility. Ten of the victims, having suffered severe injuries, were transferred to Mekelle Referral Hospital and Abiy Adi Hospital for further treatment. Several victims died either at the scene or shortly after arriving at medical facilities.
