Over 50 Civilians Killed in Alamata Shelling as Federal Forces Take Control
Fresh military clashes and heavy artillery shelling in Alamata town and surrounding areas have resulted in the deaths of over 50 civilians within three days, local residents and health professionals reported to the BBC. A healthcare worker confirmed that at least 52 civilian deaths have been documented, with victims ranging from an infant to elderly individuals, following strikes on residential areas and a Saturday market. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) had previously reported a dramatic surge in trauma casualties at Alamata and Korem hospitals. Following days of intense fighting in neighboring areas such as Karkara and Raya Mandar, Tigrayan forces withdrew from Alamata with heavy weaponry. Ethiopian federal defense forces and federal police subsequently entered the town on Monday morning, taking full control of government institutions and public services. Communication networks, electricity, and banking services remain shut down, leaving residents in dire conditions. Official statements regarding the civilian casualties and current territorial control have not yet been issued by the federal government, Tigray Interim Administration, or Amhara regional state.
