Addis Ababa Transport Bureau Reports Vehicle Emissions Testing Results
The Addis Ababa City Administration Transport Bureau has released its first-quarter vehicle emissions testing results, revealing that 44.5% of the 200 tested vehicles failed to meet standards. Diesel vehicles performed poorly, with only 13 out of 89 passing, compared to 101 out of 111 gasoline vehicles. Girma Samuel, Director of Non-Motorized Transport Expansion, stated that vehicle maintenance, rather than age alone, is the primary driver of emissions levels. He noted that the testing program currently relies on voluntary participation, which limits its reach and effectiveness. The Bureau is exploring the adoption of new technologies, such as 'Coptect,' to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution. Officials plan to monitor future results to determine if enforcement measures need to be tightened.
