Megech Irrigation Dam Officially Commissioned
The long-awaited Megech Irrigation Dam has been officially commissioned by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The project is designed to irrigate over 17,000 hectares of land, benefiting approximately 45,000 households near Gondar. Beyond agriculture, the dam aims to supply clean drinking water to Gondar city and support local urban farming, fishing, and tourism sectors.
The project has faced nearly two decades of delays, cost overruns, and management challenges, including multiple contractor changes and issues identified by the Auditor General. Recent efforts, including close federal oversight and technical interventions, accelerated the work to completion. The government emphasized the importance of the dam for regional development and its commitment to nationwide growth.
