First Ebola Patient Dies in Kenya; Ethiopia Strengthens Screening at Borders
Kenya's Ministry of Health announced the death of the country's first imported Ebola virus (Bundibugyo strain) patient. The deceased was a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for seven years before traveling by land through Kampala, Uganda, and arriving at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on October 3, 2026. Despite receiving isolation treatment, his infection was confirmed by the National Virology Reference Laboratory and KEMRI prior to his death. Kenyan authorities are actively identifying and quarantining family members, healthcare workers, and fellow passengers who came into contact with the patient. In response, Ethiopian Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba informed Tikvah Ethiopia that standard screening and surveillance measures at all air and land entry points remain fully operational. She noted that monitoring protocols are immediately intensified for travelers arriving from affected countries following WHO alerts, with cross-border information sharing and preparedness active across stakeholders.
