Holy Synod suspends Abune Rufael, orders stay at monastery

The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has removed Abune Rufael from his administrative duties following findings of canonical and administrative irregularities. He has been ordered to reside at the Debre Libanos Monastery for prayer and fasting until the next plenary session of the Synod in May 2019 E.C. Additionally, he must surrender all official vehicles to the Patriarchate, and his financial accounts will be audited and reviewed by the upcoming session.

Separately, the Holy Synod has appointed Abune Ewostatewos to oversee the Gambella Diocese in addition to his current leadership roles in the West Wellega and Illubabor Dioceses.
