Ethiopia Opens 11 New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Ethiopian Electric Utility has inaugurated 11 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Addis Ababa and regional cities, increasing the total to 14 stations with a capacity to charge 150 vehicles simultaneously. The new stations are located in Addis Ababa, Bishoftu, Mojo, Adama, Batu, and Hawassa. To manage energy demand, a three-tiered payment structure has been introduced, ranging from 14.85 birr per kWh during off-peak hours to 18.28 birr during peak hours.

The utility plans to expand to 14 more cities in two phases, covering locations such as Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Jimma, and Dire Dawa. This infrastructure development supports the growing number of EVs in the country, which has now reached 140,000 units. All stations are operational 24 hours a day.
