Ethiopian Media Authority suspends Reporter newspaper license
The Ethiopian Media Authority has announced an indefinite suspension of the licenses for the Reporter (Amharic) and The Reporter (English) newspapers, as well as their online operations. The authority stated that after monitoring the media house for over a year, it confirmed repeated violations of legal and professional ethics.
The specific violations cited include publishing content contrary to national interests, sensationalizing socio-economic issues, and disseminating distorted information that harms foreign investment, tourism, and national security. The authority noted that despite multiple discussions and final warnings issued to the media's owners and editors over the past year, no improvements were observed. Consequently, the suspension is effective from November 2, 2026 (Tikimt 23, 2019 E.C.) until the outlet meets all legal and professional obligations.
