Addis Ababa Prepares Food Supply Distribution for Upcoming Holidays

The Addis Ababa City Cooperative Commission has announced extensive market preparations to ensure an adequate supply of essential food items for the upcoming Ethiopian New Year, Meskel, and Irreecha holidays. According to Head Commissioner Shitaye Muhammed, the commission is collaborating with regional unions, consumer associations, and local producers to stabilize the supply of basic commodities including teff, flour, cooking oil, eggs, and poultry. To mitigate onion supply shortages, ties have been established with regional unions to transport onions to the capital, where consumer associations currently sell them at 60 to 65 Birr per kilogram. Regarding cooking oil, unions are distributing between 2,000 and 4,000 cartons daily to consumer associations. These essential goods will be made accessible through holiday bazaars in all 11 sub-cities, over 700 consumer shops, and 154 basic consumer associations. Additionally, discussions were conducted with 274 butcher shops to adequately address the high demand for meat during the holiday season.
