Two Options Underway to Fix Power Outage at Addis West Substation

A sudden transformer breakdown at the Addis West Substation has led to widespread power outages across several major areas in Addis Ababa over the past six days. Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Communication Director Moges Mekonnen announced that two parallel approaches are being pursued to permanently resolve the issue. The first option involves dismantling and repairing the damaged transformer at a specialized workshop, while the second option is transporting and installing a replacement transformer from another location. In the interim, EEP and Ethiopian Electric Utility are load-sharing across alternative lines to deliver power to affected neighborhoods on a rotating schedule. Due to complex technical requirements and necessary safety inspections, officials stated it is currently difficult to provide an exact timeframe for the final completion of repairs.
