Drone Flights Indefinitely Banned in Addis Ababa and Surrounding Areas
Ethiopia's National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has announced an indefinite suspension on issuing permits for flying drones in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas, effective immediately. According to NISS, the decision was made to protect key infrastructure and safeguard major national events from potential national security threats posed by drone technology. The service highlighted that it is utilizing integrated anti-drone technologies to continuously monitor and control any aerial vehicles operating in the region. Under the new directive, any drones operating without permission will be identified, intercepted, safely grounded, and their operators located to face legal action. Previously, individuals or entities wishing to operate drones were required to obtain prior clearance by specifying the flight purpose, location, drone type, and model number. NISS stated that it is equipped with advanced technology and trained personnel to counter modern security risks in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
