Prolonged Power Outage in Addis Ababa Frustrates Residents

A transformer malfunction at the Addis West substation has caused a multi-day power outage across various areas of Addis Ababa. Residents have expressed significant frustration, stating that the prolonged lack of electricity is severely impacting their daily lives and businesses, and noting that announced load-shedding schedules are not being followed in practice.

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) explained that the repair process is technically complex and cannot be completed on a fixed timeline. Meanwhile, Ethiopian Electric Service (EES) has apologized for the delays and stated they are working with EEP to restore power. The affected areas include Merkato/Ehil Berenda, Kolfe, Bethel, Tor Hailoch, and surrounding neighborhoods.
