Over 40 People Killed in Attack by Militants in Shirka District, Oromia

Over 40 people, including at least five children, were killed in an attack in the Shirka district of the Arsi zone, Oromia region, according to witnesses. The attack took place on Saturday, October 24, 2025. At least 20 others were injured and are receiving hospital treatment, with fears that the death toll could rise.

Victims were buried in a mass grave at St. Raphael Church due to the urgency and security situation. Residents described the assault as a surprise attack involving heavy weaponry, and reported that the Digele Medhane Alem Church was also targeted and looted. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission confirmed it is monitoring the situation, while the regional government has not yet provided a statement.
