PM Abiy Ahmed gives details on Ethiopia's nuclear power plant project
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that more than 30 potential sites for Ethiopia's nuclear power plant were initially identified, with that number now narrowed down to three. During a visit to the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, the PM emphasized that this long-term project is vital for Ethiopia's strategic development and will contribute significantly to health, agriculture, industry, and environmental protection.
Ethiopia plans to build two nuclear units, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, totaling 2,400 megawatts. The Prime Minister noted that this project will provide constant, reliable energy year-round, potentially surpassing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in terms of consistency. He estimated that construction of the project, even if expedited, will take up to ten years.
