Conflict in Moyale: Over 40,000 Flee to Kenya
A week-long conflict in Moyale has forced over 40,000 residents to flee across the border into Kenya, according to the Kenyan Red Cross. Residents reported to the BBC that neither the federal nor regional governments have deployed security forces to stabilize the situation. The conflict reportedly began following a dispute over the raising of the Somali regional flag in Moyale.
Local residents claim they are facing heavy weaponry and that the attackers are not merely pastoralists, but well-trained forces. While Somali regional officials blame the dispute on new administrative office establishment, Oromia regional officials contest the nature of the conflict. Civilians are suffering from food shortages and lack of medical care, while many remain trapped in the violence, with residents stating they are defending themselves with only light arms.
