Somali Region Peace Council condemns ongoing Moyale conflict
The Somali Region Peace and Unity Council has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing, multi-day conflict in Moyale. Council representative Ugaas Ali Boru described the situation as shameful, noting that there is no new conflict trigger as the communities have coexisted for over 35 years. He urged the Oromia and Somali regional governments, alongside the federal government, to intervene immediately to stop the violence and initiate dialogue.
Ugaas Ali emphasized that the conflict appears to be an attempt to destabilize the area rather than a legitimate dispute. As the unrest in the commercial city of Moyale enters its second week, neither the federal government nor the respective regional authorities of Oromia and Somali have issued formal statements. The Council maintains that all relevant parties must agree to an immediate ceasefire and prioritize peaceful discussions.
