Arba Minch residents complain over escalating monkey attacks
Residents of Arba Minch city have reported that attacks and damage caused by troops of monkeys coming from the Nech Sar National Park are escalating. Despite a previous court order requiring the park to cull alpha monkeys following complaints from residents, locals claim the measures taken are insufficient and that the attacks have actually intensified. Residents also noted that the court had previously warned the park after discovering discrepancies in the evidence regarding the number of monkeys culled.
Responding to the complaints, the Nech Sar National Park Community Service Coordinator stated that the park has removed 10 alpha monkeys in accordance with established procedures. The coordinator further emphasized that to solve the problem sustainably, hotels in the city must take necessary precautions when disposing of food waste, which currently attracts the animals.
