El Niño Impact: 20% Drop in Water Inflow Reported at Major Ethiopian Dams
Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that water inflow into its major power generation dams has decreased by approximately 20% over recent months due to the El Niño phenomenon. The reduction has significantly affected the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Gibe III, which account for over 65% of the nation's total power generation.
Consequently, EEP has revised its production targets for the 2019 fiscal year to 32,134 GWh, a 10.3% decrease from the previous year. A notable 41.5% drop in foreign exchange revenue is also projected, largely due to reduced power supply for data mining companies. EEP stated that rainfall data from September and October will be critical to fully assessing the situation, after which a decision regarding continued power supply for data mining operations will be made.
