Koysha Hydroelectric Power Project Reaches 77% Completion

Ethiopian Electric Power has announced that the Koysha Hydroelectric Power Project in the Omo River basin has reached 77% completion. Once fully operational, the project will have a generation capacity of 1,800 megawatts, contributing over 6,750 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually. The dam stands 201.5 meters high with a 1.8-kilometer length and a water storage capacity of 6.5 billion cubic meters.

According to CEO Engineer Ashebir Balcha, the concrete construction is scheduled to conclude by June 2027. The first turbine is expected to begin operation in October 2028, with the entire facility fully operational by 2029. Negotiations are currently underway with the Italian government and lenders to secure 500 million euros needed to complete the project.
