2026 BRICS Summit Begins in New Delhi with Participation of PM Abiy Ahmed
The 2026 BRICS Summit has officially commenced in New Delhi, India, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed attended the two-day summit alongside major world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The summit focuses on strengthening economic cooperation among member states, amplifying the voice of the Global South, expanding trade and financial ties, and establishing joint positions on global geopolitical challenges. Key discussion items include ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, energy supply disruptions, trade tariffs, and reforms to the international financial system. Indian Prime Minister Modi highlighted that Global South nations are disproportionately affected by global crises while lacking an adequate voice in decision-making, emphasizing that reform of the UN Security Council can no longer be delayed. Additionally, BRICS members agreed on a joint declaration that condemns unilateral warfare without explicitly naming specific countries. Currently, the BRICS bloc represents over 40 percent of the world's population and nearly a quarter of the global economy.
