Mekelle Prosecutor Appeals Verdict in Zewdi Haftu Murder Case

The Mekelle Prosecutor's Office has filed an appeal against a court decision that acquitted Yared Gebreselassie and Angesom Hailemariam, individuals previously sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Zewdi Haftu. The appeal was submitted to the Tigray High Court on Pagume 4, 2018 E.C., challenging the lower court's decision to release the suspects.

The release of these individuals has sparked controversy. Critics allege that Colonel Gebreselassie Belay, the father of one of the suspects and current deputy commissioner of the Tigray Police Commission, improperly influenced the judicial process. Reports indicate that the whereabouts of the two released individuals remain unknown.
