Expert advice on food stockpiling amid climate and El Niño concerns
Experts are advising citizens to prepare for potential food supply chain disruptions linked to climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. Professor Richard Wilding, a supply chain strategy expert, suggests that while people should not panic, they should be prepared by stockpiling essential, long-lasting food items. Nutritionists Dr. Samy Gill and Rebekah MacMahon recommend prioritizing complex carbohydrates like wheat, barley, corn, rice, and pasta, as well as shelf-stable proteins like lentils, chickpeas, and canned fish.
Experts also suggest keeping canned vegetables, milk, and shelf-stable options to maintain fiber and nutrient intake. They advise avoiding foods high in salt and sugar, such as instant noodles and certain chocolates, as these are less healthy in emergencies. Regarding the nutritional quality of canned goods, Dr. Gill notes that they maintain similar protein and carbohydrate content to fresh food, though some vitamins like B and C may be slightly reduced. Staying hydrated with 1.5 to 2.5 liters of fluid daily remains a critical priority, regardless of circumstances.
